How to Check Criminal History in Juneau County

Start with the question, not a person's name. Juneau County criminal records live in separate systems because each agency records a different event. WCCA is best for filed circuit cases and outcomes. The Clerk of Circuit Court supplies pleadings, judgments, transcripts, and certified copies that the web view does not provide. Sheriff Records holds sheriff-created incident reports and releasable booking material. WORCS returns a paid Wisconsin DOJ history drawn from the central repository. A city police report stays with the city department that wrote it.

Gather the full name, date of birth when lawfully available, likely spelling variants, approximate date, and the place or agency tied to the event. A case number, citation number, or agency report number is even stronger. Then follow a narrow path:

1. Search the likely public system and limit the results to Juneau County when that choice exists.
2. Compare date of birth, middle name, filing date, and issuing agency before treating a result as a match.
3. Read each charge at count level. An arrest allegation and a final court disposition may differ.
4. Ask the record custodian for the underlying report, judgment, or certified copy when the summary is not enough.
5. Use that custodian's correction route if a Juneau County record is wrong or belongs to someone else.

That sequence avoids a common error: treating one search result as a complete Juneau County criminal record.

Juneau County Criminal Case Search

WCCA results list the case number, filing date, county, status, birth-date display, and caption. The detail can show parties, charges, pleas, events, sentence data, and financial entries. It does not provide every filed document. The Juneau County Clerk remains the official custodian, and a prior web result may change as staff update the case.

Official Wisconsin Background Checks

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Information Bureau maintains the central state criminal-history repository. WORCS Public Access provides a name-based Wisconsin check. It is not a nationwide search and does not replace a Juneau County court file or police report. An unregistered user submits the subject data, pays through the state workflow, and saves the Order Reference Number. The result stays available online for six months. Many requests finish within minutes, while an incomplete request should be checked again on the next business day.

Matching depends on identifiers. WORCS uses exact combinations that include last name, first initial, and either date of birth or Social Security number. It may return more than one possible candidate. Its "Master Name" can be the name used on the first fingerprint submission, including an alias. A name response is not fingerprint proof of identity.

Correcting Juneau County Criminal History

A multiple-candidate response or an unfamiliar alias deserves more review. Compare the Juneau County WCCA outcome with the WORCS response first. A court disposition may have reached WCCA before it reached CIB, or a name match may point to someone else. The source of the error controls the fix. Court docket errors go to the Clerk. Sheriff report errors go to Sheriff's Records. Repository errors follow the Wisconsin DOJ challenge process.

The CIB criminal-history challenge route uses current fingerprints on an FD-258 card and form DJ-LE-247. DOJ charges no challenge fee, though the law-enforcement office taking prints may charge. A successful mistaken-identity challenge can lead to a Wisconsin Unique Personal Identification Number, or WiUPIN. That number helps separate the person from a similar name in later checks. Juneau County publishes no standing public fingerprint schedule, so call the Sheriff's Office before traveling.

Note: A changed charge is not always an error because prosecutors may amend or dismiss the allegations recorded at arrest.

Types of Criminal Records

A Juneau County criminal history is assembled from products with distinct creators and legal meanings. The arresting agency writes an incident or arrest report. The jail records intake and custody. The District Attorney chooses what to file, while the Clerk opens and maintains the circuit case. Wisconsin DOJ compiles qualifying fingerprint-supported events and later dispositions. Wisconsin DOC separately tracks prison and community supervision. These records may overlap, but none is a full copy of the others.

• Incident and arrest reports: allegations, observations, evidence, witnesses, and enforcement action held by the agency that created the report.
• Booking records: intake identity, alleged holding charges, bond or holds, custody status, and release information.
• Circuit case files: complaints, charges, hearings, pleas, judgments, sentences, and financial obligations kept by the Clerk.
• Warrants: court-issued custody process plus service information held by the sheriff or police; sealed warrants are not public lookup items.
• State records: CIB criminal history, DOC custody or supervision, and the public registry subset maintained by DOC.

Municipal citations form another layer. Mauston and New Lisbon use the Mauston Area Municipal Court, while Elroy uses Regional Center Municipal Court. Those courts hear ordinance matters, not state felony or misdemeanor prosecutions.

Juneau County Criminal Custody Chain

Juneau County has no verified county-hosted inmate name search. For current jail custody, call the sheriff or jail at 608-847-5649 and use Wisconsin VINE when custody notification is appropriate. The official Juneau County jail page and published rules provide the live route for contact and visitation details. Releasable booking material can be requested through Sheriff's Records. Do not replace this chain with an unofficial roster.

After transfer to state prison or supervision, use the Wisconsin DOC Persons in Our Care and Offender Search. A person serving only county time may never appear there. Federal custody is a third system. The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator, shown below, searches by federal register numbers or by name and demographics.

The federal image reinforces the system boundary. Absence from BOP or Wisconsin DOC says nothing conclusive about a person held in Juneau County jail.

What a Juneau County Criminal Record Shows

The fields depend on the product. A CIB history begins with identity data, aliases or disputed identifiers, and fingerprint-linked arrest cycles. A cycle can include the arresting agency and initial charges, a prosecutor decision, a court outcome and sentence, DNA registration, and DOC admission or release. A WCCA detail focuses on the filed case. A booking record focuses on custody at a point in time.

Protected identifiers, victim and citizen-witness fields, juror names, medical facts, safety information, juvenile data, and confidential cases may be withheld. "Disposed" only means the court entered an outcome. It does not mean convicted.

Juneau County Criminal Record Flow

A qualifying arrest begins a chain, but each step creates its own record. The officer's agency report captures the incident. Jail staff create the booking entry when the person is lodged. Fingerprints can transmit an arrest transaction to CIB. The Juneau County District Attorney screens the facts and may file, amend, replace, or decline charges. The Clerk then records the case events and outcome. Wisconsin courts send disposition and sentence data back to CIB, and DOC later reports state admission, release, or supervision events.

Delays and lawful changes can make the systems look inconsistent. A booking charge is an allegation. The filed complaint may be different. The final judgment can differ again. Public Access Laws

The Wisconsin Public Records Law begins with a strong policy favoring access, yet it does not make every Juneau County criminal record open without review. A requester generally asks for an existing record, not an answer to a question or a new report. The authority may redact material protected by statute and may apply the public-records balancing test. Fees must fit the costs state law allows. Court, sheriff, DOJ, DOC, and registry access rules still depend on the record involved.

A denial should identify its reason. Sensitive identifiers, juvenile records, victim information, ongoing investigative material, and records made confidential by another law can remain restricted.

Juneau County Criminal Records Center

Juneau County's criminal-justice counters are centered at the John Pier Roemer Justice Center, 200 Oak Street in Mauston. The building houses the two Circuit Court branches, Clerk of Circuit Court, District Attorney functions, Sheriff's records counter, and county jail or public-safety operations. That co-location lets a reader distinguish the agency report from the court file at one campus. Sheriff's Records is in Room 1110. The Clerk is in Room 2230.

The general county administrative address is 220 East State Street. It is not the first stop for a criminal court file, jail inquiry, or sheriff report. The official Juneau County government page, pictured below, is the directory route for current department details.

The distinction matters in a rural county spread across more than 767 land square miles. Web forms, phone confirmation, and regional municipal courts reduce needless trips to the wrong counter. The Justice Center received the John Pier Roemer name in September 2024, linking the local records building to a judicial-security milestone.

Sealed, Expunged & Restricted

Juneau County juvenile history is not released like adult criminal history. Wisconsin court policy also protects Social Security numbers, payment credentials, driver's-license and passport data, victim or citizen-witness identifiers, juror identities, and records made confidential by law or order. These limits can explain an absent result. A missing WCCA case is not proof that no record exists.

Adult expungement under Wisconsin Stat. § 973.015 is narrow. Eligibility generally requires that the person was under 25 when the offense occurred, that the maximum term was six years or less, and that the court finds benefit without harm to society. Exclusions still control. Traditionally, the sentencing court must order expungement at sentencing, and it becomes effective only after successful completion of the sentence conditions.

File with the original Juneau County Circuit Court case, not with DOJ. Court expungement removes or seals the circuit record under court rules, but it does not vacate the conviction or automatically erase the police, District Attorney, or CIB record. DOJ uses a separate fingerprint-record removal request for certain no-charge, nonprosecution, dismissal, or acquittal cases. Wisconsin has no broad automatic adult clean-slate rule.

Juneau County Criminal Report Requests

Juneau County Sheriff's Records is the main local fallback for sheriff-created incident reports, traffic citations, county ordinance tickets, crash reports, and releasable booking material. Requests may be filed in person, by fax, by mail, or through the official online form. Telephone requests are redirected to the formal process, and an in-person request may not be completed at once. Staff aim to process a request within ten business days, but disclosure review can take longer.

A useful request names the report type and gives a case number when known, incident date, people involved, and location. Fees vary with the record and lawful production cost. Prepayment is required when the amount exceeds $5. Crash reports follow CrashDocs and can lag while the deputy completes the report and the vendor receives it.

City reports do not transfer into the sheriff's report file merely because a person was booked in Juneau County. Ask Mauston, New Lisbon, or Elroy police for the incident record that city officers created.

Juneau County Criminal Supervision Records

Probation, parole, and extended supervision are state-run in Juneau County. The Wisconsin DOC Division of Community Corrections serves the county through the Mauston office at 950 Herriot Drive, 608-747-2113. The Wisconsin DOC locator is the first public status check, while WCCA supplies the judgment and litigation tied to revocation. DOC's public-record channel handles releasable supervision records. These sources answer different questions.

Probation may withhold a sentence or impose and stay one. Revocation has different effects under those two structures. Parole applies to eligible old-law sentences. For crimes committed on or after December 31, 1999, Wisconsin's Truth-in-Sentencing structure uses extended supervision instead. A person can leave prison and remain under DOC control in the community.

No verified Juneau County sheriff app was located. Custody and supervision checks therefore rely on official phone, web, records-request, WCCA, VINE, and DOC channels rather than an app-only tool.

Criminal Records by City in Juneau County

City police departments hold their own incident files, and the local municipal court route depends on the city. Mauston and New Lisbon send ordinance matters to Mauston Area Municipal Court. Elroy uses Regional Center Municipal Court in Union Center. State felony and misdemeanor cases from all three cities go to Juneau County Circuit Court, while the sheriff and jail handle separate county records.
